At this point, it’s safe to say that Star Wars: Outlaws did not land the way that Ubisoft thought it would. Ubisoft has been clear that Outlaws under performed in terms of sales, and even the game’s creative director Julian Gerighty bemoaned the response it got from critics. As a result, a lot of changes were promised, and they’re starting to come through. Title updates were announced, and there’s still more to come. The next update to come is set to arrive on November 21, 2024 alongside the Wild Card DLC, and it promises to be the game’s “biggest update yet,” says Ubisoft in a message detailing what the team is focusing on in the next update. Changes are coming to three key areas that those who’ve played Outlaws for any extended period of time could guess, and a fourth, unexpected change. The aforementioned Julian Gerighty is no longer creative director on the title, and instead Drew Rechner has taken up the role. It was Rechner then who addressed Outlaws players today, saying that in the next update, Title Update 1.4, Ubisoft is focusing on three key areas to improve. In the order that Rechner mentions them, the three areas are combat, stealth, and controls. “The first key area of improvement to the game is combat where we see a real opportunity to add more depth and excitement to the experience, further rewarding your tactics and precision,” writes Rechner. “Our second key area is stealth which is not only about improving the readability and consistency of enemy detection, but also providing choice in how you want to approach each encounter. Finally, our third key area of focus is centered around the character controls, which means improving the reliability of cover, increasing the responsiveness of climbing and crouching, and generally improving the consistency of the controls overall.” “You can expect to see more details about how we will be celebrating and embracing player choice more than ever before, whether it’s sneaking through encounters, going in blasters-blazing, or everything in-between. We will provide more specific details about the changes to these areas and more in the upcoming weeks as we provide further updates to you. All of this will culminate in the release of Title Update 1.4 which will release on November 21st alongside the Steam launch and first story pack, Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card.” Rechner adds “To our players, thank you again for your support and feedback, and we hope you will enjoy continuing exploring the galaxy with us. And if you’re new to the game, there’s never been a better time to experience the Outer Rim with Kay and Nix!” Even in positive reviews of Star Wars: Outlaws (like PSU’s) that positivity comes with huge caveats, and fingers pointed to multiple aspects that Outlaws just misses the mark on. Improvements to combat and stealth could have a significant impact on the Outlaws experience if they’re implemented correctly. The question is whether or not players will care enough to give Outlaws a chance after it whiffed on its opening shot at launch.
