Veteran games journalist and Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier is due to have another book out soon that focuses on one of the biggest names in the games industry, Blizzard. It’s bound to have plenty of salacious details, and as sneak peek ahead of its launch Schreier published an excerpt from the coming novel Play Nice: The Rise And Fall Of Blizzard Entertainment which revealed the reason for Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime leaving the company in 2018. Essentially, it comes back to Bobby Kotick, and the simple fact that Morhaime was tired of having to fight Kotick on everything. According to Schreier, the problems began immediately after Activision purchased Blizzard in 2007. While Blizzard was focused on making games that people wanted to play, Kotick and the rest of Activision’s leaders were focused on making as much money as they possibly could. Morhaime spent the last decade of his career at Blizzard fighting Kotick, and in 2018 just simply couldn’t take it anymore. He even tried to leave a year before that in 2017, but was convinced to hold off. Once Schreier’s entire book is out, it’ll be very interesting to see what other important points it reveals.
