Speaking during an interview with Rolling Stone, John Epler, Creative Director at BioWare, reflected on 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda, stating that he feels that the RPG was much better than critics at the time suggested. Mass Effect Andromeda was the hotly anticipated follow-up to Mass Effect 3, coming five years after the conclusion to the original trilogy that concluded Commander Shepard’s story. However, at the time it was something of a disappointment to fans and critics alike, who noted that bugs and a general lack of polish and strong writing stopped it from achieving the level of greatness many had hoped for. The game had its fans of course, and we rated the game quite highly in our own review, which you can read here. At the time of launch, there were technical issues and things that didn’t work. We had been doing Dragon Age pre-production on versions of Dragon Age 4, and we did have a version that was a lot more open-world. But again, we ran into the same problem of how do you make it compelling or narratively interesting? The reception to Andromeda definitely solidified that. BioWare is currently working on the next instalment in the Mass Effect franchise now that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out, which is currently in the early stages of production.
