Now that its over, Bungie announced future plans for its popular shooter with a new annual release model. This includes two new expansions scheduled to release in 2025. What are the new Destiny 2 expansions? In a recent post from Bungie, the new annual release model is called Codename: Frontiers. To put it simply, it’s a roadmap for the developer’s upcoming content. This new direction begins with the first of two Destiny 2 expansions, currently called Codename: Apollo. It’s scheduled to release in Summer 2025. The second is called Codename Behemoth, and is slated for a Winter 2025 release. This means instead of having one big expansion, there will be two medium sized expansions per year. Image(Credit: Bungie) Destiny 2 Game Director Tyson Green shared their new direction with story telling, and gameplay with the upcoming expansions. While the developer doesn’t plan to stray from great story telling, they are currently prototyping new things to keep the game fresh. “We are excited to try new things that challenge your idea of what a Destiny experience can be,” says Green. “We are actively prototyping non-linear campaigns, exploration experiences similar to the Dreaming City or Metroidvanias, and even more unusual formats like roguelikes or survival shooters. Each expansion will present a new opportunity to try something different.” “Departing from one-shot campaigns doesn’t mean we are turning away from great story telling,” Green continues. “Going forward, we want to return the mystery and wonder that was woven into the fabric of early Destiny, when the story felt ripe with possibilities and an epic sense of exploration and discovery.” The Destiny 2 expansion Codename: Apollo will kick off this new direction. While details are currently scarce, Narrative Director Alison Lührs confirms the next expansion is a “nonlinear character driven adventure.” Teases of the expansion will be present in the next two Episodes. “Previously, in stories like The Final Shape, you experienced the story as A to B to C to D in a nice straight line,” says Lührs about the expansion’s nonlinear direction. “In Codename: Apollo, our story takes place over dozens of threads you’ll explore and discover. So, when you land on our brand new location, the story starts at A, and then you can choose if you want to explore C first, or try and get into B, or maybe investigate D.” What else is coming alongside the Destiny 2 expansions? The seasonal update release cadence is also changing. Instead of three Episodes, a new Major Update will launch at the beginning of a Season, and three months later. This means four total seasonal updates per year. Each new Major Update will include new Activities, Rewards, Weekly Events, features, and balance updates to refresh the core game. Bungie also announced changes to the core game. Bungie will attempt to make Destiny 2 more approachable by modernizing its activity UI, the Director. The goal is to make it easier to find and launch activities. Also, an improved Challenge Customization system will be introduced, allowing players to find the challenge level that suits them. Reward tiers will be based on the chosen challenge level. Last month, amid layoffs at Bungie, Destiny 2 expansion rumors began circulating that future content would be smaller in scale than The Final Shape or Lightfall. It looks like those claims were, in fact, true. (Source: Bungie) The post Destiny 2 Expansions Revealed During 10 Year Anniversary appeared first on PlayStation LifeStyle.
